Award Winning Mayland Community College
Award Winning Mayland Community College is located in the Blue Ridge section of the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina on the Avery/Mitchell County line just outside the town of Spruce Pine. Mayland currently offers 26 curriculum programs including numerous college transfer options; hundreds of continuing education offerings; Basic Skills and GED completion program; two off campus locations in Newland and Burnsville; Corrections Education at Avery/Mitchell and Mountain View Correctional Facilities; and distance learning opportunities in most curriculum programs, as well as in continuing education. The College now serves more than 6,300 persons each year through its educational programs, which represents more than 16 percent of the adult population living within the service area. During the 2010-2011 Academic year, Mayland served 1,650 Curriculum, 2,958 Continuing Education, and 838 Basic Skills students, doubling enrollment since 1997.

The JobsNOW initiative will bring together all the resources available to North Carolinians to create new jobs and to put our people back to work. The “12 in 6” worker training initiative is a workforce development program designed to benefit North Carolinians who have lost their jobs. The initiative will create community college programs in 12 careers, each requiring less than six months to complete. Mayland offers the following academic programs through the “12 in 6” initiative: Nursing Assistant, Phlebotomy, Office/Clerical Support, Carpentry, Welding, Food Service, and Autobody Repair.
Customized Training for Business and Industry
The Customized Training Program was developed in recognition of the fact that one of the most important factors for a business or industry considering locating, expanding, or remaining in North Carolina is the ability of the State to ensure the presence of a well-trained workforce. The program is designed to react quickly to the needs of businesses and to respect the confidential nature of proprietary processes and information within those businesses.
